This past month the Scott Arboretum and staff have been recognized for their efforts in the horticulture community. The Scott Arboretum received the 2008 Community Greening Award presented by the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society (PHS) and Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful program. This award recognizes the Scott Arboretum for outstanding public plantings…improving the quality of life through horticulture.

“Cutting edge” is a phrase, especially in the plant world, that is not easily defined. For the Scott Arboretum, it represents plants that are not very well known in public gardens, private gardens, and the horticulture trade.
I first saw Edgeworthia chrysantha growing at the state fairgrounds in Raleigh, North Carolina in 1993. We were being given a tour of the gardens and collections by Tony Avent, who now owns Plant Delights Nursery. It is a transition time for the seasons…I can feel and smell the autumn in the first part of the morning before the heat and humidity of the day set in. It is also a transition time in the gardens as well - with summer blooms fading and trees beginning to think about fall color. With the rain we have had in the last few days, leaves have plumped up again and the gardens, particularly in the Terry Shane Teaching Garden, feel lush and green. The varying shades and textures of green are set off here and there by touches…
